Apple Grunt

Apple Grunt

In olden days this pudding was cooked in a Dutch oven hanging over an open fire. The name “Grunt” presumably came from the sound the pudding made as it bubbled and grunted beneath the biscuit like topping.

Ingredients

1/2c.sugar

2tbsp.butter

1egg

1c.flour

1/2tsp.salt

1/2tsp.baking powder

2c.sliced apples

1/2c.buttermilk

1/2tsp.vanilla

6tbsp.brown sugar

11/2tbsp.flour

1/2tsp.cinnamon

1 1/2 tbsp. Butter

Directions

Cream sugar and butter together; add eggs and mix. Blend flour, salt and baking powder together and add to mixture. Mix soda with milk and vanilla; mix all together. Add apple slices and pour batter into a buttered baking dish. In a separate bowl, combine brown sugar, flour, cinnamon and butter, mixing until crumb texture; sprinkle over apple batter. Bake at 375 degrees for 35 to 40 minutes. Serve hot with a scoop of ice cream.
